Why Ignoring Oral Health Is Costing Businesses Billions

Jun 01, 2026

  • Your workplace is making your employees sick. And almost nobody is talking about it.

Let me share something that stopped me in my tracks.

Oral diseases affect 3.7 billion people worldwide. That is nearly half the planet. And the cost to the global economy?

A staggering $710 billion every year.

But here is the part that really hits close to home for anyone running a team or managing a workforce. $323 billion of that loss comes purely from employees missing work, underperforming, or pushing through the day in pain. Not from treatment costs. From lost productivity alone.

And still, oral health does not feature in most workplace wellness programmes. Not even a mention.

Think about that for a second.

We spend so much energy optimising team performance, investing in mental health support, ergonomic chairs, flexible hours... but we overlook something as fundamental as whether our people can eat, speak, and show up without pain.

The FDI World Dental Federation just released a landmark report called Oral Health at Work, and it reframes the whole conversation. Because adults spend roughly one third of their lives at work, the workplace is actually one of the most powerful platforms we have for delivering preventive care and catching problems early.

This is not about adding another item to the HR checklist. It is about recognising that healthy employees are not a nice to have. They are the foundation of everything else we are trying to build.

If you lead a team, manage a business, or shape health policy, this one is worth your attention.
