Eco-Friendly Dentistry: Caring for Patients and the Planet

As dentists, our mission is to keep smiles healthy, but the way we run our practices also affects the health of our planet.
Every small choice, from the materials we use to the energy we consume, adds up. Moving towards eco-friendly practices isn’t just good for the environment, it’s better for our patients, our team and our communities.
Did you know?
Over 80% of dental practices have adopted digital and eco friendly technologies that significantly reduce waste and carbon footprint, from paperless records to digital imaging.
The use of biodegradable dental bibs has increased by 50% since 2020, cutting an estimated 200 tonnes of plastic waste annually.
Around 70% of practices now use digital X‑rays, slashing chemical waste associated with traditional film processing.
Nearly half of dental clinics plan to implement water saving fixtures by 2025, potentially conserving 300,000+ liters of water per practice each year.
In my practice, embracing sustainability has meant:
1. Going completely paperless to reduce waste and streamline operations.
2. Using energy efficient lighting and equipment that cut operational costs and carbon emissions.
3. Prioritising eco friendly materials and digital technologies that are safer for patients and the planet.
Sustainability has not only improved efficiency, it’s strengthened patient trust and aligned our values with those of a more environmentally conscious community.
What sustainable initiatives are you adopting in your practice or organisation? I’d love to hear about your journey.
